The Matchbox
When lighting a cigarette you must hold the matchbox tight. Pluck out the match with your pointing finger and opposing thumb. Strike the match against the abrasive side of the box. Trust in the first blow by leaning in to inhale. There's no shame in needing a second match, but right now there is no second match.
Take the flame into your hand, turning to face the wind. Resist the urge to hold the matchbox over the flame when shielding. Just be glad you have made it this far, the whole box could have gone up in smoke before lighting a candle.
Wave away the flame beneath your nose to savour the smell. Bury the matchstick, you won’t want to see it again, it will come up on its own when you need it.
